Messages of congratulations are rolling in for Nick Politis and the Roosters after it was revealed earlier today that gun Warriors halfback Shaun Johnson would be on the open market for 2020.
While it’s likely to be some time before an official announcement is made, the rest of the rugby league community has decided to do without all the speculation that usually accompanies big-name free agents and just accept that he’ll probably end up at the Roosters.
Within minutes of the news breaking this morning, the texts, emails and phone calls started rolling in for Politis, with well-wishers throughout the land offering their congratulations the Roosters’ inevitable coup.
‘Even though we desperately need a quality halfback to get us back in the finals mix, we’re not even going to bother trying to sign him,’ said a rep from one struggling club.
‘I sent Nick a message offering our heartfelt congratulations, as well as expressing our desire to maybe meet the Roosters in a grand final one day if we’re lucky,’ she said.
The timing couldn’t be any better for the Bondi club, with current premiership-winning halfback Cooper Cronk expected to call it a day at the end of the 2019 season.
It’s understood that the club’s previous premiership-winning halfback Mitchell Pearce has sent Politis a nice card, signed by Shaun Kenny-Dowall, Aidan Guerra, Connor Watson, Tautau Moga and himself.
